Encaustic painting is an art form dating back to ancient Egypt. Encaustic medium is a combination of beeswax and resin which makes a luscious and durable surface that can be applied to any absorbent, rigid substrate. It is applied in a molten state and each layer is fused with heat into the layers below to make a single solid piece that can be many layers thick. A variety of mixed media is incorporated into the wax to add depth, dimension and interest. It lends itself to wonderful textural elements that are shown in the paintings that incorporate hand made papers, sand, bas relief wooden shapes, grave rubbings and small embedded objects, all on wooden panels.
D'Antonio will display several bodies of work. One series of paintings depicts seascapes and mangroves, another, societal images such as hearts and gears that are shown within the context of an abstract multilayered work. Since anything absorbant is fair game for the encaustic process - sea biscuits, gourds and pods have been encased within the fragrant wax. The series of gourds represent a reimagining of the the kitschy waxed fruit of the mid 20th centry - oversized pear, apple and orange shaped gourds are shown on wood pedestals and waxed baskets. This series also has a subtext of the waxing/preserving of our real food. Colorful sea biscuts are displayed on marble stands and poinciana pods are sewn onto raffia mats. Inspiration is everywhere and encasutic lends itself to a wide explaoration of media and substrates with unusual elements and techniques.
