Help Catch Ghost Traps!

Until recently, there was no legal way for volunteer clean up efforts to remove “ghost traps” from local waters. The traps are private property and protected by law, so even though they might seem derelict, tampering with them, their contents, lines or buoys is illegal. Unless you get trained to remove them. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has created a program to train and authorize volunteer groups to collect derelict traps and trap debris during open or closed seasons. The City of Key West is teaming up with FWC, and students from Florida Keys Community College’s Environmental Club to conduct some clean ups this summer and we want you to be involved! Come learn more about the program and how you can help at this month’s Green Drinks, on Thursday, May 28th, upstairs at Kelly’s Caribbean Bar & Grill, 301 Whitehead Street from 5:30-7pm. Food and Beverages available to purchase, Speaker Gabby Renchen from FWC will start at 6pm.
